Mountain View Elementary Students Reach Reading Goal with Record First Grade Participation

PRESCOTT VALLEY- While hundreds of kids anxiously watched inside a gymnasium at Mountain View Elementary School Tuesday, Humboldt Unified School District Superintendent Daniel Streeter and others members of the school administrative staff along with a firefighter sat behind a plastic plate with a fork waiting for the waitress to walk down with the morning meal-a steady selection of bugs to eat.

“I ate some things that I never thought that I would eat,” said Streeter who dinned on items such as worm and a cricket.

The program is part of a reading rewards initiative taken on by the school to instill a love of reading in kids by setting goals to reach by reading a certain amount throughout the year.

Kids have enjoyed reaping the rewards for over ten years as in the past principal JoAnne Bindell has kissed pigs, frogs, been taped to the wall and some administrators have even been slimed.

“Every year we try to come up with something different,” Bindell said “It’s just something that’s going to get the kids motivated.”

As the months went on, kids kept track of their progress with beetle juice beakers on the wall. The school has different levels of reading allowing kids at any level to accrue points for the end-of-the-year celebration. Not only did the students meet the reading goals, but Bindell mentioned this year had a record number of first grade students reading.IMG 4305

Students kept track of their progress throughout the year by watching these beakers grow.

“They set a pretty aggressive reading goal as a school and for them to be able to reach that at this point, says a lot about this group,” Streeter said.“If we can have a little bit of fun with them, then it’s our pleasure to do that for them.”

After the rest bowed out, principal Bindell stood up and ate the cockroach in the wonderment of the children cheering and watching.

“Knowing that it’s for the kids, I will do just about anything for the kids,” Bindell said.

Bindell, along with others who enjoyed a diet of bugs, encouraged the kids to continue reading throughout the summer vacation.
