WHAT: During the occupation of Mosul, Iraq, which began in June 2014, Islamic State members burned and destroyed the city's central university library. The photo depicts the total destruction of this once spacious facility and its vast holdings (source: Reuters). The United Nations considers this tragic event to be "one of the most devastating acts of destruction of library collections in human history."
Soon thereafter, beginning in October 2016, American-supported Iraqi forces have been in the process of retaking the city of Mosul, and the library is being rebuilt. To help supply books, the Embry-Riddle chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and the Embry-Riddle Honors Student Association have organized a local book drive throughout the month of April. All books collected through this effort will be sent to Mosul, where they will be organized and shelved by Iraqi librarians. Books in any language and of any genre are welcome for donation.
