Prescott, AZ- October 4, 2010- In remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures, YHS is welcoming Fathers Bob Greene and Richard Lassiter to conduct a Blessing of our community’s Homeless Animals on Thursday, October 4th; the saint’s Feast Day. The two priests, from St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Prescott, will start blessing the animals at 11 a.m., when the doors open to the public. Every pet will be blessed and will receive a certificate verifying their “blessed” status.
“Everybody knows YHS pets are the best; now they are blessed too”, said Ed Boks, YHS executive director. “We are all about adding value with every adoption and this is pretty special and we are grateful to St. Luke’s for visiting YHS on this special day.”
This event is just for the homeless animals at YHS; please do not bring your pets to YHS for a blessing, however, you are welcome to participate in the event and say “Amen”. The two priests will be available to bless your pets from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Prescott Dog Park at 3181 Willow Creek Road. Deacon Kimball Arnold said, “It’s not unusual for churches to bless animals on this special day, but St. Luke’s is taking it to a whole new level. We want to make this time of blessing available to the entire community.”
The priests will be blessing all pets; dogs, cats, fish, birds, horses, etc at the Dog Park on Willow Creek. If it is not practical to bring your pet, you are encouraged to bring a photograph.
The Blessing of Pets usually goes like this: “Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.”
The Yavapai Humane Society has been serving Yavapai County’s citizens and animals since 1972. YHS has shelters in Prescott and a separate spay/neuter clinic offering low-cost spay/neuters and low-cost vaccinations. In July of 2010, YHS adopted a “no-kill” ethic which led to an 80% decrease in euthanasia and a 95% live release rate.
